Construction industry supplier SGB Hire Channel Islands has closed with immediate effect.
In a statement owner BrandSafway has confirmed the business in Jersey and Guernsey has ceased trading with the loss of 25 jobs:
"We confirm that a decision has been made to close our SGB Hire Channel Islands operations.
"This was not an easy decision and was reached only after careful consideration and consultation with relevant stakeholders.
"Our immediate priority is to support our employees in this situation by providing appropriate assistance.
"Customers and business partners are being informed in a timely and appropriate manner.
"We would like to thank our employees, customers, and partners for their trust and collaboration over the years.
SGB has operated in the islands for 70 years, with sites on Longueville Road in Jersey and on Pitronnerie Road in St Peter Port, Guernsey."
SGB Hire stocked a range of tools, builders plant, gardening products, event and catering supplies, site services, equipment and workwear for hire and sale to trade and domestic customers.
Adrian de Gruchy, Chairman of the Jersey Construction Council, said the closure would have an impact on everyone affected, from the directors, employees and clients to subcontractors and suppliers:
"The Council will not comment on the factors or circumstances that may have contributed to the decision to cease operations.
"SGB has been a longstanding provider to the construction and domestic markets for more than 70 years, delivering hire services and associated support across the Channel Islands."
