Artists offered free town studio for a year

Artists are being offered free studio space for a year in St Helier, if they commit to helping social housing tenants find their own creative side.

ArtHouse Jersey and Andium are partnering to offer an area of Cyril Le Marquand Court for artists to create, develop, sell and display their works.

In return, they will be asked to host regular free workshops for the community, to share their talents with others.

ArtHouse Jersey says the activities should give residents the chance to be creative or develop a new skill, without them being aspiring artists themselves.

Director Tom Dingle says the unit on Charles Street has a high footfall - with a cafe and yoga studio nearby - and will provide the successful artist with a place to showcase their work.

“It’s no secret that space is of a premium in Jersey, especially so for those who are pursuing creative careers, so to be able to take a year-long ownership of a centralised location to create, sell work and inspire the community is a rare opportunity indeed.

We look forward to seeing who is interested in coming forward, and from those who are passionate about creating positive arts related activities for the community to enjoy.”

Peter Le Gresley, from Andium Homes, hopes residents will enjoy the offer of free art-based workshops.

"We strive to create beautiful, inviting neighbourhoods that foster a sense of community, not only for those who live and work there but also those who pass by.

This collaboration with ArtHouse Jersey will play a pivotal role in transforming this area into a vibrant, inviting place for all to enjoy.”

Criteria includes having the right to live and work in Jersey and being in the studio for at least four days a week.

Applications are open until 5pm on Friday 18 October.
