17 schools create new 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' artwork

New artwork created by schoolchildren, to encourage islanders to 'reduce, reuse, and recycle', has been unveiled at the Household Recycling Centre!

17 schools have been collaborating with the government's Infrastructure and Environment Department to redesign the artwork that was previously in place.

Each letter has been individually designed, with the children involved getting to see the completed piece in-person today (14 July).

Eva and Molly from Plat Douet School said:

"We've done some flowers, painting flowers with acrylic paint and mixing them!

"We had some plastic bottles and we had flower templates. and we drew over them and cut them out, so it would be a flower, and then we painted them.

"We also mixed some colours with the acrylic paint that we had left over, so then it would also be recyclable."

Margot, six, from Springfield School, said:

"I weaved plastic bags together to make a tapestry!

"I learned not to litter!"

Miss Erin Sampson, eco-lead at Springfield School, said:

"When we got offered to do the competition, we jumped at the chance because we love doing anything that raises the profile of recycling and the message of reduce, reuse, recycle.

"We ran a competition across the school to design the letter Y and then myself and my eco-council, which are two children from every class from Year 1 up until Year 6, judged all the entries.

"It was a really hard decision! We had to think of a number of factors like durability and the weather and the theme of the competition was waste we produce, so we also had to think which design really showcased that.

"We settled on Margot's because we loved the idea of plastic bags being woven together and we really loved the idea of it making a tapestry, so we chose that one!"
