Watson Misses Out On Wimbledon Last 8

Guernsey's Heather Watson's hopes of reaching a first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon ended in a straight-sets defeat by Jule Niemeier.

Watson had made the last 16 for the first time her career, beating Slovenia's Kaja Juvan on Court One in straight sets.

But the 30 year old Channel Islander lost in straight sets to German youngster Niemeier to miss out on a place in the quarter finals.

There was plenty of support for the Guernsey player on Centre Court, with the match preceded by a celebration to mark the court's centenary.

British number four Watson was contesting her first major fourth-round match at her 42nd Slam.

But her hopes of progressing were dashed by 22 year old Niemeier,  world number 97, who will now face compatriot Tatjana Maria, ranked 103rd, for a semi-final place.

"I think I am better at being more level-headed.  I will look back and be proud of myself I think for this week, but right now I am a bit disappointed." - Heather Watson

Watson will return to action for the women's doubles with partner Harriet Dart today (4 July)
