The two month programme of works means a temporary A&E ward has been created in the Day Patient's Unit.
From today (16 September), A&E has moved to Day Patients to enable an upgrade to take place.
Ward manager Becky Cooper says people should still use the existing entrance:
"They will be able to book in and come to the same place as they always have done. A receptionist and staff will be able to direct them and answer any questions they have. And there will be adequate signage, directing them to the place they need to be."
All emergency services staff have been briefed about the change.
Work in A&E will include new flooring, upgraded treatment bays, a larger staff desk area and charging zone for medical equipment.
Elaine Burgess, the director of care delivery, says a section of Giffard Ward will be used for some day patients and the bed number in A&E will remain the same:
“We are mindful of the waiting lists for all specialties and are working hard with the MSG to minimise disruption and offer alternatives to patients where there is availability within this time period. We are scheduling as much business as usual as possible within the constraints of our resources."
