T20 World Cup Trophy to tour Guernsey schools

A new community cricket programme has launched to encourage more youngsters to try the sport.

Titan Wealth says to celebrate Guernsey men's victory in the T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifier in 2024, it is launching a new community cricket programme.

It will see every child in years 5 and 6 in state primary schools try cricket, as part of the curriculum.

Children will also be able to see the T20 World Cup Trophy in school assemblies.

The International Cricket Council and island cricketers will explain the sport's history and show off the silverware from 12 to 14 June.

CEO of Titan Wealth Robin Newbould says they are passionate about supporting upcoming talent.

"With the Guernsey Men’s team in touching distance of World Cup qualification, it’s the perfect time to inspire the next generation and we hope that the programme, the visit by the impressive T20 World Cup Trophy, and the chance to hear from some of the island’s top players does exactly that."

Guernsey Cricket Development Manager Ben Ferbrache says exciting times are ahead.

"Titan Wealth’s support has allowed us to combine different elements of community and schools cricket into a cohesive and more effective programme.

"We want as many people as possible to give cricket a go as the sport has changed so much recently and the new shorter games make it exciting to play and to watch.

"Guernsey’s success last year has already led to a lot more interest and with the European qualifier for the final two places at the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka coming up, we know others will be inspired to have a go."

The trophy will also be on public display at the KGV Playing Fields on 13 May from 5pm till 6:30pm.

International Cricket Council Development Officer Esther de Lange hopes their effort will inspire a new generation.

"We are delighted to be bringing the trophy to Guernsey as part of a three-day community engagement, and we hope to see thousands of people.

"The future of the sport relies on a love of cricket which starts from a young age and we have no doubt that some of the children we meet will be inspired to pick up a bat and ball and will end up playing for Guernsey in a few years."
