Sure admits some Guernsey phone boxes don’t work amid removal plans

A number of Guernsey's phone boxes that are earmarked for removal due to lack of use, are broken.

The telecoms company Sure previously said it planned to remove all 22 phone boxes around Guernsey because they are underused, with no calls made from them this year.

But Island FM listeners say that may be because when they try, the phones don’t work.

Sure's Chief Commercial Officer, Simon Baldwin, says they have had no complaints until now, and argues their poor condition is another reason to take them out.

"One of the reasons we’re proposing to remove the 22 remaining phone boxes in Guernsey is that many are no longer in full working order, and we haven’t received any complaints about their condition.

"This reinforces what we’re seeing - that the community no longer relies on them.

"Thanks to Sure’s ongoing investment, Guernsey is now one of the best-connected places in the world, with world-class fibre broadband in place and 5G services on their way, enabling how people communicate today."

A public consultation on removing the boxes ends on 31 October.
