Storm Ingrid halts Guernsey charity sleep-out

Heavy rain and strong winds from Storm Ingrid have forced the organisers of a sponsored sleep out to postpone.

More than 100 people were due to sleep outside the KGV tonight (23 January) for the second Big Skipton Sleep Out.

However, the fundraising event for Caritas, which supports people experiencing homelessness in Guernsey, has been postponed.

Storm Ingrid, named by the Portuguese Met, is due to sweep across the Channel Islands tonight, bringing strong winds and blustery showers.

Organisers, who reviewed the site this lunchtime, say that while the harsh conditions reflect the reality of homelessness, safety must come first.

"While we know how important it is for participants to sleep out in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness, we also have a clear duty of care to everyone involved.

"Forecasts indicate that wind conditions are expected to worsen as the day progresses, increasing the risk to participants, volunteers and anyone on site.

"As a result, the Sleep Out will not go ahead today. We will share further information shortly on next steps, including options for rescheduling and how fundraising will continue."
