Station Upgrade Will Cut Flood-risk

The refurbishment of Guernsey's Grandes Rocques pumping station to reduce the risk of flooding in heavy rain is said to be progressing well.

Guernsey Water says its largest refurbishment project of 2022 is currently running ahead of schedule.

The Grandes Rocques pumping station has seen a new wet well, valve chamber and kiosk installed.

The replacements aim to make the pump more energy efficient and provide extra capacity to reduce the risk of wastewater flooding during heavy rain.

"The station has an improved capacity to hold more sewer flow.  It has got a better buffer to manage any rainfall or increase in flows without it impacting customers."

Work has been going on over the summer holidays in the grounds of La Mare d Carteret School.

It will continue - as planned - when the school reopens to students next week, but Carl Falla from the utility firm says it won't disrupt learning:

"The bulk of the real, heavy excavation work was completed while the school was closed in the summer holidays.  The work will progress once the schools reopens, but we are going to get over the worst of the construction activity so we are confined to the smaller activities and there should be very minimal disruption."
