Report shows Guernsey is too expensive for some to live in

Guernsey Community Foundation report shows quality of life and good mental health are often linked to ability to earn.

A new report highlights that health and happiness in Guernsey is largely determined by the amount people earn.

CEO of the Guernsey Community Foundation, Jim Roberts, says the cost of living is forcing some to leave, especially young families:

"The poorer you are, the more likely you are to be socially excluded, suffer mental health problems, have other life limitations around the type of work you do, your social connectedness, so it really does permeate throughout life."

Jim Roberts says the new report is designed to provoke debate in the election period and draws together published and unpublished research and a survey commissioned by the Guernsey Community Foundation:

"We thought we should try to get a sense more broadly of what challenges face the island. We thought, here is an opportunity to tell the story of what it is like to live in Guernsey in 2025."

Mr Roberts says the research shows young people are being affected by a series of mental health issues:

"There is a lot of low self esteem, evidence f bullying in schools and in some cases a sense of hopelessness about the future."

But, he says there are many positives about living in Guernsey too:

"The natural environment, the short commutes, the sense of community. But I think it is important we recognise the other, often hidden elements of island life as well."
