New Guernsey postbox topper celebrates Liberation 80

Islanders might have spotted a new celebratory postbox topper outside town church.

Tamara O’Brien has been creating crochet decorations for special occasions since Liberation Day 2021.

4 years on, Tamara has created a very detailed postbox topper celebrating 80 years of freedom in the Channel Islands.

She says the Occupation-themed piece took her 4 months to put together.

"I looked at all sorts of images and memories linked to Liberation Day, things that really stand out for islanders.

"The military car felt like a great nod to the Cavalcade, which is such a big part of the celebrations.

"I also knew I had to include the SS Vega; its arrival was absolutely crucial, bringing food to islanders who were on the brink of starvation.

"It’s such a powerful symbol of hope and survival.

"And then there are the evacuees, I really wanted to reflect what people would’ve been wearing at the time, and to acknowledge the difficult choice many families had to make in leaving the island.

"It’s a small way to recognise their sacrifice."

Sitting just metres away, the Victor Hugo bench has also received a Liberation glow-up.
