Lift-Sharing Could Reduce Traffic

A campaign group says it would be 'relatively easy' for Guernsey to achieve school holiday traffic levels by adopting different forms of travel.

The Better Journeys Project says if more people cycled, walked, and used the bus traffic levels could drop by as much as 15%, year-round - this is the level we typically see during the school holidays.

They say lift-sharing could also make a big difference to Guernsey roads.

Group member Barrie Duerden says the idea makes sense for the island:

"We are quite a close-knit community, we tend to know people around us who make similar journeys every day - to work for example.

If they shared a lift then we would be in a much better position in terms of congestion."

He says travel habits need to change as the population increases:

"Over half of the journeys into town in the morning during the week, that's over 3,400 journeys, are people on their own in cars, which causes an enormous amount of congestion.

People complain about the traffic when they are the traffic."
