Guernsey's Island Games Medals Revealed

Winning athletes at Guernsey's 2023 Island Games will receive medals created by a local graphic designer.

More than 1,600 medals will be presented to athletes during the week of Guernsey's 2023 Island Games.

Chloe Sarre entered her design into a competition and won back in 2019.

Her concept of Guernsey surrounded by 24 segments was chosen over 70 other entries, by organisers and a public vote.

She explains her creative process:

"I started with a few sketches, and I quite like the idea of all the islands traveling to one location to compete.

It symbolises the togetherness of all the athletes."

The tagline of the Games "inspiring islanders" and the 2023 logo are engraved on the other side.

Ms Sarre says she is thrilled her designs are still being used after the 2021 games, she originally designed them for, were postponed because of the pandemic:

"I'm very honoured that they are being used at such a prestigious event.

There was a moment in time when you weren’t sure if the island games were going to happen, so it’s incredible to finally see them in person.

I can’t wait to watch the games and see them given to the various athletes."

In team events, every member will receive their own medal.

They will be presented in a pebble-shaped box, to reflect the natural environment of the islands.

Games Director Julia Bowditch, says the medals are special:

"Athletes who win these medals will probably treasure them forever.

They are beautiful and I cannot wait to see them being presented at the medal ceremonies.

Chloe’s design spoke to the underlying ethos of the Games which is about friendliness and bringing people together.

They certainly add an extra sparkle to our preparations."

The medals were sourced through a local company and manufactured off-island.
