Guests staying at Sarnia Hotels have helped raise more than £10,000 for Guernsey Trees for Life.
Since April 2024, Sarnia Hotels has run a scheme that allows guests to opt out of a room clean and donate £2 to charity in return.
In the first 13 months of the initiative, daily housekeeping was skipped 3,392 times, raising more than £10,000 for Guernsey Trees for Life.
The donation will enable them to plant more than 1,100 native trees and hedgerow plants in Guernsey.
Trees for Life has gifted a Mountain Ash tree to the hotel group, which has been planted in the gardens at Hotel de Havelet.
Managing Director of Sarnia Hotels, Karel Harris, says guests have got behind it:
"In August alone, over 300 room cleans were skipped at Les Rocquettes Hotel.
“It’s such a small change, but it’s had a big impact and allows us and our guests to contribute to a greener Guernsey.
"We know how important it is to protect the environment around us, and we’re proud to support the work of Guernsey Trees for Life.”
Technical Officer at Guernsey Trees for Life, Andy McCutcheon, says they are thankful for the support.
"Donations like this are vital for restoring habitats, increasing biodiversity, and supporting climate goals.
"It’s fantastic to see a hospitality business making sustainability such a natural part of the guest experience.”
Hotel de Havelet Manager Gennaro Festivo told Island FM there are ongoing discussions to extend the scheme and select a new local charity as a beneficiary.
