A planning condition for the new Les Ozouets campus has been removed after strong opposition.
The Water Lanes run from Collings Road through to just below Amherst School and are a popular traffic-free route for walkers.
The plan was to cover them with a grid and provide an eco-friendly way to get to the new campus.
Cyclists too could then use the lanes - currently they are banned.
But following residents' opposition and then broader dissent last summer, it has been decided to revisit wider travel plans.
Education's political head, Deputy Paul Montague, says it was clear that covering over the Water Lanes was unpopular:
“A fundamental part of working for our community is listening and engaging when they communicate passionately with us on issues they care about, and we heard loud and clear that they did not support the proposed changes to the Water Lanes."
Instead, he says Traffic and Highways will look at options for the Collings Road area.
“While the safe travel of learners to and from the campus is incredibly important, I hope that this new approach will look at the area holistically, rather than the Water Lanes in isolation, for the benefit of all who use the area.”
