Guernsey Prison staff continue their work to rule

Despite 'positive and constructive' talks, Unite union members say their goodwill at work is not being recognised.

Unite tell Island FM that they held 'positive and constructive' talks with the States last week, but the work to rule stays in place, and pay and conditions remain the stumbling block:

"The workforce's longstanding position is that prison officers have not been appropriately recognised for the exceptional levels of goodwill they have provided over many years to keep the prison service operating, and will continue to seek meaningful recognition of that commitment."

It is understood the work to rule is effectively a withdrawal of any work that goes beyond the scope of a prison officer's job description.

Unite say further pay negotiations will be held early this week.

Meanwhile, Unite say workplace improvements have been agreed by both sides:

"An action plan has been developed to address a number of workplace issues identified by our members.

"That plan has been shared with the workforce, who have welcomed the progress made and the commitments given by the employer to address those concerns."

Unite also say they have the support of inmates:

"Many prisoners have written letters and signed petitions expressing their support for prison officers, acknowledging the professionalism, fairness and commitment shown by staff."

The prison service told us last week that the use of agency prison staff is being considered, but none have yet been appointed.
