Eight 'super polling stations' proposed for Guernsey's 2025 Election

The States’ Assembly and Constitution Committee says allowing islanders to vote in any polling station next year will compliment the island-wide voting system.

Guernsey had two 'super polling stations' in the last General Election, in October 2020.

These are larger set-ups, that accept voters regardless of which parish they live in.

The States say these had the highest footfall, while some of the smaller parish specific set-ups saw small numbers.

Reflecting on this, the States Assembly and Constitution Committee recommends eight super polling stations across the island for the June 2025 election.

These would be at Beau Sejour, Les Maingys Activity Centre, the Styx Community Centre, the Castel Douzaine Room, the St Martin’s Parish Hall, the St Sampson’s Community Hall, the St Peter Port Constables’ Office and the St Andrew’s Douzaine Room.

This would leave the Forest and Torteval without a dedicated polling station, but after consultation no Parish officials have raised concerns about this.

The head of the States Assembly and Constitution Committee, Deputy Carl Meerveld, says this move makes sense for islanders:

“The Committee believes it is important that the community can vote in any polling station, as this reflects our island-wide voting system and ensures that nobody can turn up at the wrong venue.

Having considered footfall during the 2020 election, and taking feedback from the parishes into account, the Committee is confident that its proposals for 2025 will ensure that the electorate has plenty of choice over where to cast their vote.”

The next Guernsey General Election will take place on 18 June 2025.
