Deputies asked to approve £6m Guernsey Airport roof repairs

The scaffolding at Guernsey Airport could come down for good, if the States agrees an 18 month long, £6 million repair job.

The covering has been up since Storm Ciaran in 2023, to prevent loose panels being blown off in strong winds.

It has prevented at least one dislodged panel falling to the ground earlier this year.

Surveys have concluded the terminal design and construction defects dating back more than 20 years have caused the roof problems.

The States’ Trading Supervisory Board (STSB) is asking States Members to agree to repairs that are expected to take 18 months to complete and cost an estimated £6.1m.

If deputies agree, contractors will be invited to tender for the work.

STSB President, Deputy Mark Helyar, said:

"We are dealing now with an issue that we inherited, because the root cause of the problem dates back decades.

"Given the airport is a prime business and travel gateway, we need to address the structural issues with the roof as soon as possible, so that it is safe to remove the scaffolding. With States approval we can begin the tendering exercise, which will help to identify the best value, least cost solution.’"

The STSB says the proposed repairs to the supporting steel frame would ensure that once the scaffolding is removed it should not be required again in he 20 years remaining design life of the powder-coated aluminium panels.
