Chouet Quarry Approved With Conditions

Planning permission has been granted for a new quarry on the Chouet headland.

The Development & Planning Authority unanimously voted for the plans.

Several concerns were raised about the development at the Open Planning Meeting, including the noise, dust and vibrations from the quarry and the impact on the biodiversity of the area.

The DPA has approved the planning application with conditions, including increasing the number of dust receptors at the site, restricting the days and times at which blasting will be permitted and considering lowering machinery to reduce visual and noise impacts.

Guidance for the quarrying of the headland at Chouet was published in November last year after the States Assembly approved the principle of extracting aggregate from the headland in the summer of 2021. 

The President of the Development & Planning Authority, Deputy Victoria Oliver, says they have taken on board islanders’ comments in adding the extra conditions:

"We have listened carefully to the representations made and considered this application in accordance with the Development Framework approved last year, based on the principles of the Island Development Plan.

The conditions which have been added to this planning application are so important in ensuring that this work is carried out with the appropriate mitigations.

We are really grateful to the parishioners that took the time to look at the application and make comments which the Authority have taken on board through the additional conditions.”

A consultation on planting around the perimeter of the site will be coming back to the Authority.
