Channel Island mums celebrate rugby triumph

Mums from Guernsey and Jersey joined a victorious all-mum rugby team.

A freshly formed rugby team made up of mums took to the field for the very first time last Saturday (30 August) at the Yeovil 10s rugby tournament.

Five mums from the Channel Islands joined The Maa Maa's (which are named after the famous Barbarians known as the Baa Baa's).

Carly Parrot, Tanya Scholtz, Jillian Smith and Daisy Travers travelled to the event from Guernsey, and Taye Baokye joined from Jersey.

Despite a couple of early defeats and injuries, the Maa Maa's made it through to the final and ultimately defeated Cullompton RFC.

Guernsey mum, Daisy Travers, says there are barriers for mothers joining or returning to sports.

"Juggling organising child care on game day, you might be breastfeeding or need to pump.

"There are mental challenges as well when going back to a sport after a long spell off.

"Having any time for yourself is also really difficult in those post-partum days."

Daisy says rugby and mother networks both form strong bonds, so the combination is amazing.

A social media group set up by one of the team founders, @mumswhoplayrugby, now has more than 700 global members.

The team hopes to arrange more fixtures, and a group are meeting to watch the women's rugby final at the end of September.
