Bids Open To Build GSPCA Wildlife Hospital

The GSPCA's biggest build in its 151 year history is to go to tender.

The project was approved in 2022, having been delayed by the Covid pandemic.

Permission has been granted to demolish some of the old buildings on the site which date back to the 1940s.

The Guernsey animal charity is currently in the process of finding a contractor to carry out the work.

Three new buildings will be constructed consisting of a new Welfare and Rehoming Kennels, Ferret Unit, and the Wildlife Hospital.

Manager Steve Byrne estimates the whole project to cost around £3 million.

“It is hard to guess exactly the costs but we have made rough estimates and you can donate to a particular build online, or you can make a general donation to the builds and our work.

The Wildlife Hospital without doubt is the biggest of the three builds and likely to cost around £2 million.

So far, thanks to some amazing donations and support we have raised nearly £1.4 million towards these projects and we cannot thank all those that have donated enough.”

The shelter is currently home to nine seals, Barnacle Bill the loggerhead turtle, over 80 hedgehogs, injured birds and wild rabbits.

The new Wildlife Hospital will help house the 3,000+ wild animals that the GSPCA help every year.

Islanders can make a donation to the project and the charity's work here.  The GSPCA has listed specific costs, including needing £100k for drainage, £70k for glazing and £40k for each rehabilitation room.
