1,000 New Homes In Guernsey All Centred On The Bridge

Looking north towards the Vale Castle and Griffith's Yard.

500 new homes have already been earmarked for Leale's Yard and the old Kenilworth Vinery, but now the Guernsey Development Agency is suggesting another 500 could be built on the Northside.

The Guernsey Development Agency has identified sites, like Griffiths Yard and land beneath the Vale Castle and next to the Power Station where it could fit 500 homes.

This would be on top of on top of the 300-plus to be built on Leale’s Yard and nearly 200 on the Kenilworth vinery site.

The Vale Douzaine warns that the additional traffic, both private and commercial, that would be generated by 'such a large influx of people in quite a small area' may not be manageable.

However, Senior constable Richard Leale says with some alterations, he would support the plans:

"The plans regarding the Bridge area and the harbour, providing they can get the finance for it, actually come across very well.

It improves the layout of the Bridge and the use of the harbour, which one could argue, at the moment, parts of it is underused."

Islanders are invited to share their views on the development of St Peter Port and St Sampson’s harbours later this month.

The company Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design has drawn up plans and it wants feedback both online and in person.

Meetings are being held in St Peter Port on 21 March from 1-6pm in the Market Building and on 23rd March from 10am-

2pm at the Rock Community Church, St Sampson's.

Deputy Victoria Oliver, the president of the Development & Planning Authority, says she wants people to get involved:

"Local Planning Briefs provide an exciting opportunity to use joined up thinking to bring forward development in areas along our seafront which has not been possiblein recent years."

"This exercise is a fantastic opportunity for the public to have their say on how they would like to see the harbours and surrounding areas enhanced, unlocking the potential for significant development in these important areas.”
