Two muslim islanders targeted in 'racially motivated' assault

A man and a woman have been arrested, after two muslim islanders suffered a 'racially motivated' assault outside Jersey's Islamic Centre.

The attack happened this afternoon (6 March 2026) at around 2:00 pm on Aquila Road in St Helier.

The men did not sustain serious injuries.

Officers have arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of common assault and disorderly conduct.

He will appear for the Magistrate's Court on 1 April, charged with disorderly behaviour.

A 36-year-old woman has also been arrested in connection to the incident and remains in police custody.

The States of Jersey Police say it does not tolerate 'any form of hate crime' and believes it can have a 'harmful ripple effect' across the island.

The Community Safety Team is working with the Muslim community, connected to the centre.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Chief Minister, Deputy Lyndon Farnham, has condemned the attack, calling it 'deeply concerning':

"I am reassured that the police responded swiftly, that one individual has been arrested, and that further enquiries are ongoing. It is important that this matter is investigated fully, and I know the police are treating it with the seriousness it deserves.

"The Muslim community in Jersey has my full support. No one should ever feel unsafe or singled out because of their faith or background.

"Behaviour of this kind is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our island.

"Jersey is a community that respects and values people of all backgrounds and beliefs, and we stand together against discrimination and hatred in any form.”

Reassurance patrols will be carried out for the remainder of Ramadan.
