Spike in fraud emails expected amid ongoing cyber attack

There's a warning to expect an increase in phishing emails in the coming weeks, because of an ongoing cyber attack.

The Jersey Cyber Security Centre says it's responding to the incident, which is affecting 'several Jersey organisations'.

The attack has seen criminals gain access to contact lists and impersonate these organisations to send fraudulent emails.

They trick people into sharing sensitive information like passwords, logins, and financial details.

Matt Palmer, Director of Jersey and Guernsey Cyber Security Centres (JCSC and GCSC) said:

"We’ve become aware of an ongoing phishing campaign where criminals have stolen customer contact details from several local organisations and are sending fraudulent emails to Islanders to try and steal personal data. These are often known as ‘phishing’ emails.

"We are supporting affected organisations to respond to the incident and are carrying out our own investigation. We appreciate these organisations coming forward and seeking out support and advice: they have done everything they can to respond to this incident."

The JCSC is asking islanders to take basic steps to keep themselves safe:

Check the details. Look at the full sender address and at where the links really go.
Do not click links or open attachments you were not expecting to receive.
Contact the organisation using details you already have, or that you have looked up yourself. Never use the phone number or link in the message.
Report it to phishing@jcsc.je.
Delete the message and block the sender.

Mr Palmer adds:
