Shark dies after washing up on Greve D'Azette beach

A shark has died after twice washing up at Greve D'Azette beach.

It washed up for the first time yesterday and was reported by a local vet.

Jersey Coastguard, the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and Marine Resources attended and while the shark was showing small signs of life, it couldn't be revived and the incoming tide then took the shark away.

It then washed up again today and was collected and taken to the Government knackers yard in Trinity.

No obvious signs were found to indicate a cause of death, with no signs of interaction from fisheries or entanglement.

It's the first time a Smalltooth sand tiger shark has been found in Jersey since records began, but it has washed up on the UK shoreline before.

The shark weighted nearly 600kg and was 430cm in length.
