A record number of people set off from Elizabeth Harbour at 3am, watched the sun rise over Jersey, and are still walking.

Temperatures are set to reach 25 degrees today, which means although it will be warm, it won't quite reach last year's high of 32.4°C.

In that heat, 1,002 people took on the full 48-mile hike, including 17 firefighters in their full kit.

70% of walkers completed the route.

GALLERY: An 'incredible' year for the Island Walk

This year, a record number of walkers set off on the start line.

Russell Turner helps to organise the walk with the Rotary Club, he's done the walk 14 times. He said:

"It's amazing how many people come over from the UK, and other places, to do the walk.

"And I remember when you're walking along talking to various people and finding out they are coming from various places, you also realise that you are seeing parts of Jersey who were born here and lived here for 80 years, have maybe never seen.

"You look forward so much to it, not just for the walking, its never been about the fitness challenge to me, its about being involved in the premier community event in the island.

"You think about how many people are involved, and how many charities doing the checkpoints as well."
