Public Health launches Diabetes prevention programme

A new programme has been launched to help up to 500 islanders reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next two years.

It aims to help islanders diagnosed with pre-diabetes to make sustainable lifestyle changes.

The government says it forms part of a long-term 'Prevention First' approach to improving islanders' health through prevention, early intervention, and earlier diagnosis.

Jersey Diabetes Prevention Programme is a nine month long structured programme delivered by DDM Health, which has been commissioned by Jersey's government.

Put together by dieticians, psychologists and specialist health coaches, it focuses on physical activity, nutrition, sleep, mental health and wellbeing.

The service is available through face-to-face, digital and remote coaching support options, with support available in Portuguese and other languages.

Those taking part will also have access to the GRO Health app - offering a personalised digital platform for education and coaching.

Prediabetes often has no obvious symptoms, meaning many Islanders may be unaware they are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Early identification and support can significantly reduce that risk.

Islanders diagnosed with prediabetes can be referred into the programme by their GP or can self-refer into the service by visiting www.gov.je/jdpp.

Those who have not had a formal assessment are encouraged to self-refer or speak to their GP.

Public Health says people living with obesity, those with a family history of type 2 diabetes, or those with other risk factors may benefit from a blood test to check their current status.

Dr Andrea Sanabria, Interim Director of Public Health said:

“Preventing ill health is central to our Prevention First approach. Type 2 diabetes can have a significant impact on people’s health, but for many it’s preventable.

"The Jersey Diabetes Prevention Programme will provide practical, personalised support to help Islanders who are at increased risk to make sustainable changes to their lifestyle.

"By intervening early, we can support people to live well for longer and reduce the future impact of long-term conditions across our community.”
