Prisoners at HMP La Moye are recording original songs this week that will feature on an album of music.

This is part of a social responsibility project run by the prison in collaboration with community art team The Moving Arts Collective and charity Finding Rhythms.

Its aim is to give inmates a creative outlet and an opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings through song writing.

10 prisoners, with little experience in music, have been chosen for the project

These inmates are working alongside a team to help them bring their visions to life.

At the end of the workshop, HMP La Moye prisoners will receive a qualification confirming their participation and new skills.

Gemma Lofthouse, Head of reducing re-offending at the prison, tells us this has been a week of developing new skills:

"It's amazing to see the transition and improvement in such a short space of time.

I've sat in a couple of sessions for a few minutes here and there and I see their confidence growing and growing, It's so nice to see the support they're giving each other.

Writing allows thoughts and feelings to come out and everybody has written something different. Some people have written in their native language which allows them to express their thoughts and feelings in their own individual ways.

Actually seeing them talking and discussing their words and feelings with each other is just an incredible thing to observe."

The Moving Arts Collective says the album, titled 'Song of Freedom' will soon be launched with a listening party.
