Pharmacists get access to patient medicine records

Selected pharmacists in Jersey can now access key patient information such as medication history.

The Community Pharmacy initiative is aimed at making it easier for islanders to get advice, treatment, and support.

The type of information they can access is restricted to medications and medication history, vaccination history, allergies, and relevant medical conditions.

It will be viewed via the Electronic Medical Information System (EMIS), the secure digital patient record system used by GPs and other healthcare providers.

The government says the change will give patients a 'better, faster and more convenient service'.

The three pharmacies taking part in the pilot are:

Reids (Longueville) - 7 Miladi Parade, Longueville Road, St Saviour

Coop (New Era) - New Era Health Centre, Victoria Road, St Clement

LV - 24 Beresford Street, St Helier

We're told the pilot will be assessed 'before any decisions are made about wider implementation'.

Social Security Minister, Senator Elaine Millar said:

"Giving pharmacists access to the right medical information will help them provide more effective care.

"Whether they're offering advice or dispensing medicines, having the information they need means Islanders can receive the best possible care, while their privacy remains protected."

Superintendent Pharmacist Matt Johnson says the information will only be accessed when there is a clear clinical reason for doing so and it is relevant to the care being provided.

"Pharmacies can already obtain information from GP surgeries when needed, but digital access will improve the speed, accuracy and efficiency of that communication.”
