Discarded fishing gear from Jersey is being given a second life, as sunglass frames and litter picking tools.
A trial project has shipped unwanted ropes and nets to a firm in Cornwall that specialises in recycling them into plastic pellets that can be turned into useful goods.
The first delivery was made in June.
It's a collaboration between the government's Marine Resources team, Ports of Jersey, the Prison Service - which separates out the different fishing materials, Channel Seaways and Waterhaul.
Waterhaul describes itself as being 'dedicated to tackling the problem of ghost gear' - lost or discarded fishing gear - which it says is the most abundant form of plastic in the ocean.
It recovers ropes, nets and lines to create ' Traceable Marine Plastic' polymers and has developed its own range of sunglasses, litter picking equipment and pocket knives.
It is hopes the trial can be expanded.
Anyone wanting to dispose of fishing gear should drop it at the designated site at the entrance to the fishermen's compound near the top of La Collette slip.
