Major clean up begins after Storm Goretti

Jersey has been battered by Storm Goretti, with trees brought down, property damaged and water and power outages in parts of the island.

A major clean up operation is underway across after last night's storm swept across the Channel Islands.

Goretti roared in, with wind strengths picking up at around 6pm on Thursday night and peaking between 9pm and midnight.

Jersey Met says recorded gusts reached 95mph. The west of the island was worst-hit.

There are around 85 recorded locations of fallen trees across the island, some blocking roads of footways.

Infrastructure and Environment say it is prioritising main routes but the island-wide clean up will take days, not hours.

Emergency services say, though they were busy, there were no reported injuries.

Travel 

Jersey Airport has confirmed there was limited damage and has reopened.

All ferry sailings for today have been cancelled. 

School bus routes will be running this afternoon.

Roads

Infrastructure and Environment say it is prioritising main routes for clearance, but a clear up will take days.

Multiple trees are down in parts of the island, with some blocking roads.

Public services and spaces

Power has been restored to around 100 homes. Approximately 200 customers remain without supply across multiple incidents, and reports of further outages are still being received.

Jersey Post says there will be no postal deliveries or collections today, due to no boat arrivals or departures. All Post Offices are open as usual.

Freight services will arrive tomorrow mo​rning.

Police will not be enforcing disc parking zones today as traffic wardens are assisting with storm response efforts across the island, and people may not be able to safely reach their vehicles at this time.

Howard Davis Park is closed due to danger to the public from five fallen trees.

Coronation Park is expected to reopen by 1 pm.

Winston Churchill Park is partially open with 2 trees down and main paths to Park Estate blocked.

The recycling centre at La Collette will be open as normal this weekend​.

Springfield gym and stadium is closed due to damage, and will provide members with further updates. 

Jersey Zoo will be open from 10 am today as planned.

Schools

Schools will open if it is safe to do so, they have been told to assess opening individually.   Many are opening later in the morning to allow more time for students to get there safely.

Property damage

The extent of property damage is currently reported as fallen cladding and lost tiles, with some garden structures, such as sheds, flying into the road.

A glass structure is reported to have shattered onto the pavement in St Clement. 

In town, the ice rink structure at the Weighbridge came loose and there was minor damage to the hospital which closed Gloucester Street temporarily, but the road is open now.

Overnight, some properties in St Ouen were without power for a time when a storm took out a power line, and some homes in Gorey lost their water supply.

As the peak of the winds subsided, teams headed out in the early hours of the morning to assess the damage and clear blocked roads of fallen trees.

St Peter

The Infrastructure department is updating a live map of where there are problems on the roads.

Islanders can also report issues by calling I&E: 01534 445509, emailing dfi@gov.je or reporting debris to their parish hall.

In Guernsey, two blocks of flats in St Peter Port had be evacuated due to the damage caused when a tree hit the buildings, with around 50 people moved to emergency hotel accommodation.

Jersey Met has downgraded the wind warning to Orange, with gusts to 50 mph this morning.
