Jubilee Motoring & March-Past Pageant Moved

A motor show to mark 70 years of the Queen's reign has been moved after organisers were denied permission to use Victoria Avenue.

One of the main events for the Platinum Jubilee has been altered with just weeks to go.

The JIMF Pageant on Friday 3 June due to take place along Victoria Avenue has been moved to Broad Street.

Here is how it is still described on the events programme issued by the Bailiff's Office:

"The pageant will take place at 11am and will include a formal march past on the eastern bound route of Victoria Avenue consisting of representatives from all uniformed organisations in Jersey. The pageant will be reviewed by the Lieutenant Governor and the Bailiff and followed by vehicles to represent the 7 decades of Her Majesty's reign."

The Jersey International Motoring Festival organisers say the permit for it to use Victoria Avenue has been refused.

"...the permit for the Queens Pageant and Motor event from 0930 until 2100 on Friday 3rd has also been rejected so the Queen’s Pageant will now move to Broad Street starting at approx. 1030 hrs and we have agreed that the Motoring Festival Sprint will be moved back to an 1830 hrs start time on Victoria Avenue."

In a social media post, the JIMF team say it has been in talks with the authorities about its plans since last November and submitted the relevant paperwork in early February.

"..it doesn’t appear to have been looked at until last week despite constant requests for updates. Getting this news at such a late date in the events planning has caused major disruption and financial loss however the organising team are busily rescheduling to make sure this great event will happen."

Steve Cartwright from the Bailiff's Office says it became apparent that a two-day closure on Victoria Avenue was going to have an huge impact on islanders so the Platinum Jubilee march-past has been relocated to Broad Street.

"We have got 108,000 people on the island. Not all are going to want to take part in it but they still want to be able to travel across their island, so we just needed to minimise the impact of that during a holiday weekend which is four days long."

A 'small' cavalcade is now planned for the town pageant with the JIMF asked to supply vehicles from the seven decades of the Queen's reign.  They will make a 'short and sharp appearance'.

The Festival's 'Rolling Roadshow' planned for Victoria  Avenue on 2 June will also not take place because a permit was rejected.

The traditional Moonlight Sprint will be held on the avenue on Friday 3 June from 6.30pm.

Meanwhile, tickets are available from today for today for afternoon tea on Jersey's high street to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

A table will run the length of the town precinct on Sunday 5 June.

Tickets cost £10 per person and can be purchased through Eventbrite.

The programme of events for the long bank holiday weekend includes:

* Queen's Birthday Reception, Government House, St Saviour  on Wednesday 1 June at 7pm -  including entertainment from the Band of the Island of Jersey and a 21 gun salute from the Jersey Militia.

* Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacon - Glacis Field, St Helier from 6pm to 10pm on Thursday 2 June -  with live music, food and entertainment leading up to the lighting of a virtual beacon at 9.45pm.

* Screening of the Platinum Party at the Palace, Howard Davis Park, St Saviour from 6pm to 10.30pm on Fridday 3 June - a family friendly live screening of the BBC's special concert from Buckingham Palace will bring together some of the world's biggest entertainment stars. The screening will begin at 8pm and the park will be open for picnicking from 6pm.
