JSPCA appeals for help to keep their animals cool

The JSPCA is asking for help to keep their animals cool in the soaring heat.

The Animals' Shelter is inviting donations of hot water bottles. Staff are filling them with ice-cold water for the animals to lie on.

It's as Jersey is expected to set another heat record today (26 May), with highs of 34°C forecast.

That would smash the previous 2003 May high for the third day in a row.

It reached 31°C yesterday and 30.1°C on Sunday, beating the May 2003 high of 28.9°C.

Katie Kay, Head of Service Delivery at JSPCA, said:

"They (the animals) are doing OK, but we're working really hard to keep the temperatures down inside for them because the heat can be really difficult for them to cope with, so we're just trying to do everything we can to keep them cool and comfortable.

"This is always a busy time anyway, but when the temperature picks up and there's more people out and about, more animals in distress, we do see a lot more calls so it has been a busy weekend."

The charity is asking anyone who can help to drop the water bottles off at their base on St Saviour's Road.
