Jersey Teen Wins Sports Person Of The Year

16-year-old Libby Hart has won Sports Person of the Year at the Jersey Sports Council Awards.

The teenage markswoman was crowned following a public vote.

This follows a big year for Libby, where she won the Senior 10m Air Rifle Championship and became the first female take the title since the inception of the competition in 1976.

Libby was also the youngest to win the championship, at just 16-years-old.

At the Island Games, she won gold in the Senior 10m Air Rifle Championships, silver in the Pairs event and was awarded the Young Athlete of the Games trophy.

Following from these successes, the young markswoman has been invited into the British National Squad.

Libby Hart tells us she was shocked at her win:

"I was quite surprised, I didn't think I would really win it. I was up against people who I know from previous sports who have done amazing things and I thought they would definitely win over me."

Libby tells us how she got into the sport:

"My dad shoots, so I kind of followed him, and then someone asked me if I wanted to try air rifle and try getting into the Island Games. I then borrowed his gun and that's how I got into air rifles.

"I now do rifle shooting, both prone and standing so I either lie on the floor and shoot or I stand up and shoot.  I do that .22 - which is a bullet - and I do that indoor and outdoor.  I also do air - which is a pellet - standing at 10 metres."
