Jersey Marks Liberation Day

Jersey is marking 76 years since the island's liberation from Nazi Occupation.

For a second year, there is no main public event because of the coronavirus pandemic.

That means no crowds of thousands in Liberation Square, and no party at the Weighbridge.

Instead the Bailiff's traditional address, service of thanksgiving and the re-enactment of the moment liberating forces freed the island from German rule in 1945 are all online.

The Liberation Music Festival has also gone virtual with its programme of music, and a special concert this evening.

Parishes are planning their own events for June after restrictions on gatherings have eased.

The Jersey Old Motor Club is running a twelve churches cavalcade  - delayed from Boxing Day - for Liberation Day.

Cars that survived the Occupation will be among the cavalcade visiting every parish church.

The Bailiff, Tim Le Cocq, has said plans are already underway to make Liberation 77 'the liberation day that we have all missed'.
