Deputy Lyndon Farnham has joined calls for an immediate cessation of violence against civilians and the release of all hostages.
The Chief Minister, Deputy Lyndon Farnham, has today written to the UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, expressing Jersey's position directly, alongside our alignment with the United Kingdom on matters of International Relations.
He has condemned the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, has joined calls for an immediate cessation of violence against civilians and called for the release of all hostages.
In the letter, he expresses Jersey's position directly, urging the UK to maintain the very firmest pressure to bring the conflict to an end:
“I urge the UK Government to take the firmest possible action to press for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of all civilians, and unfettered humanitarian access into Gaza.
The international community must not turn a blind eye to breaches of international law or recent reports, including from Amnesty International, raising serious and credible concerns that aspects of Israel’s actions in Gaza may be in breach of obligations under the Genocide Convention."
He says Jersey is 'gravely distressed' by the scale of civilian loss of life, including the deaths of 'thousands of children':
"The destruction of critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, water supplies and homes, further compounds what is already a profound human tragedy."
The Chief Minister also reiterated Jersey’s commitment to humanitarian relief - that Jersey Overseas Aid remains in contact with international partners, exploring avenues for urgent assistance and longer-term support for those affected by the conflict.
Jersey has allocated over £1.3 million since October 2023.
He says Jersey stands with all those 'calling for peace, accountability and the urgent protection of civilians, regardless of nationality', to 'bring an end to this unacceptable level of suffering'
