Jersey International Motoring Festival gets into gear

The Jersey International Motoring Festival revs up the action, after an earlier than usual start.

The annual showcase got underway on Wednesday, with a procession of vehicles through St Helier and a display in the Royal Square.

Today (4 June) is the day we can see the JIMF Rolling Roadshow down Victoria Avenue, with a demonstration of classic and modern vehicles from motor clubs around the island and world-famous racing cars and bikes from the history of international motorsport.

Victoria Avenue will be closed from 6:30 pm.

Organiser Alex Salmon has teased:

"It will start with a display from a few local motorbike riders, with maybe James Bond thrown in the mix..."

Friday will see the Moonlight Sprint, a competitive spin on the night before as drivers tackle the avenue at speeds over 100 mph, with the setting sun the background for the event.

It's had its biggest number of sprint entries yet, with 123 vehicles. Alex told Channel 103 there will be a 'great' mix of 'world champion riders, with people who are doing this and getting into motorsport for the first time.'

For this, there will be another 6.30 pm closure on the Avenue.

Islanders will also be able to see the traditional host of attractions on the weekend with the Westmount Hillclimb, the static showcase of impressive vehicles in People's Park, live music, as well as drivers taking to the roads around Victoria Park.

On Sunday, the Grand Finale will include a demonstration by the Active Arena celebrating motorsport culture, and displays from Kart racers ranging from those as young as six to local racing champions.
