Jersey declares Storm Goretti a major incident

A major incident is being declared as Storm Goretti is set to hit the Channel Islands.

Jersey's government has announced that from 7:00 pm on 8 January 2026 the impending storm will be declared an event which may bring serious harm or disruption to the island.

Jersey Met is continuing to monitor Storm Goretti, which is bringing severe storm Force 11 winds and heavy rain to the Channel Islands, the UK and northern France.

A red level wind warning remains in place, with the peak expected between 7:00 pm and 3:00 am.

Islanders are being reminded to stay indoors, with the clear message 'stay home and stay safe'.

People should only call 999 for emergencies, where there is a threat of risk to life.

The hospital's Emergency Department will remain open this evening but, again, people are urged to only go there if it is a medical emergency.

Schools are expected to be open tomorrow, unless parents hear otherwise.

Jersey Electricity is asking that islanders steer clear of any damaged power infrastructure, such as fallen overhead cables, and to report any emergencies to 01534 505050.

Service Delivery Manager Dave Powell says they plan for the worst, but hope for the best, and their engineers will be working to secure the island tonight.

"We'll assess first thing in the morning where we are and put a programme together.

"If islanders find themselves off supply, please report and tell us."

Mr Powell also advises tha islanders charge their phone, batteries and power banks just in case there are any power cuts.

Jersey Airport is closing at 6pm and will reopen at 7.30am on Friday.

Ashley Magg, Airport Operation Director said:

”We ask passengers to check directly with their airline for flight updates - we thank everyone for their understanding and please stay safe.”

Ferry sailings are cancelled.

Supermarkets and many other businesses and offices are shutting early too.

The peak of the storm is predicted to coincide with high tide at 10pm, bringing a risk of wave surges and coastal flooding.
