Hydration breaks to be introduced at Battle of Flowers

Just like at the World Cup, Jersey's Battle of Flowers is introducing hydration breaks!

It's in response to the forecast indicating temperatures of almost 30 Celsius on Friday.

There will be a hydration break every 25 minutes from the start of the parade until the final exhibit arrives in the Lower Park Compound.

Each stoppage will last for three minutes, to give those taking part regular opportunities to take on water and recover from the heat, while making sure the parade continues to move and stays on time as much as possible.

Participants are also being urged to drink plenty of water before and throughout the event, wear appropriate clothing, use sun protection, and look out for one another.

The Jersey Battle of Flowers Association is also urging people watching the parade to follow the same advice and to, where practical, bring parasols, umbrellas or other forms of personal shade to stay safe from the sun.

Martyn Maguire, on behalf of the Battle of Flowers Association, said:

"We are very conscious that the expected temperatures will place additional demands on those taking part in the Battle, and we want everyone to enjoy the experience safely. The regular hydration breaks are a practical measure that will allow participants to rehydrate throughout the parade without significantly affecting the running of the event.

"We would also encourage everyone coming along to watch the Battle to prepare for the heat. Bring plenty of water, use sunscreen and, where possible, bring a parasol or other suitable shade. Looking after yourself and those around you will help everyone enjoy what we hope will be a fantastic Battle Day."
