Highs of 39°C forecast on 5th day of Jersey's June heatwave

Some Jersey schools have decided to close as the island endures a fifth straight day of extremely hot weather.

With many classrooms not having air conditioning, children have been sweltering in the heat.

Many schools have already been closing early as a result, and some have decided not to open at all today because of the build up of heat in the classrooms.

Today (25 June) could be the hottest day of this hot spell - and the hottest ever recorded in Jersey.

Highs of 39°C are forecast, which would beat the 37.2°C recorded on Tuesday which itself smashed the previous June heat record by almost four degrees.

It would also surpass the island record of 37.9°C experienced in July 2022.

Staff at Jersey Zoo are making sure their animals are keeping cool and comfortable in the soaring temperatures.

Ben Matthews, Curator of Mammals, said:

"While some of us are finding it quite difficult to stay cool, the animals are really well taken care of here at the zoo.

"All the enclosures are really well designed to cater for the animals 365 days a year, but we do take this opportunity to offer some novel enrichment, which helps keep them particularly cool during this time.

"It's normally ice lollies, not the ice lollies you'd buy from a shop of course!

"We take some of the animals' normal diet and we can freeze that into trays and offer the ice block for them to keep nice and cool.

"Some of the animals particularly enjoy swimming more this time of year and some animals do enjoy if we put a sprinkler or a hose in the enclosure and offer a little bit of a mist, they make full use of that!

"There are some animals, of course, which are really well adapted to this weather and they're particularly enjoying themselves!"

Today is set to be the last day of the current heatwave.

Thundery showers are predicted from late afternoon, and temperatures set to drop significantly on Friday, although it will still be 27°C.
