Health degrees for islanders offering guaranteed employment

Jersey's health service is trying to attract more islanders into training locally as nurses and midwives.

The Faculty of Health Education, based at the General Hospital, is hosting an open day aimed at growing the island's own healthcare workforce.

It offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, which can be studied for locally.

This year, up to 25 places are available for adult nursing degrees.

Opportunities in midwifery and Children and Young People’s nursing are also offered on an alternating annual basis.

Since September 2013, 117 student nurses have begun their training with Health and Care Jersey, with 60 undergraduate learners currently studying.

HCJ has supported 11 student midwives (seven now qualified) and 13 Operating Department Practice students, with 10 currently qualified and working in clinical practice.

The 'Discovery Open Day' this weekend will feature interactive workshops, programme guidance and one-to-one advice. Some current students will share their experiences and answer questions.

Two drop‑in sessions will be held at the Education Centre at the hospital on Saturday, 25 April, between 10 am and 12.30 pm and between 1.30 pm and 4 pm. Islanders should register their attendance.

Hazel McWhinnie, Dean of Nursing, Midwifery, AHP Education, says they are proud to offer the programmes:

The courses will start in September 2026, with limited places, and are only available to those with five years of residency.

The deadline is 1 July 2026. Funding options can also be discussed during the Discovery Day and on an individual basis.

Students who successfully complete their degree programme are guaranteed employment in Jersey.
