French Avalanche Death: Inquest Opens

An inquest has opened into the death of a Jersey resident after an avalanche in the French Alps.

61 year old Zbiginiew Hermaszewski was skiing in a group with two other guides near Alpe D'Huez on 1st March when a large slab of snow fell off the mountain.

He was pronounced dead by a French doctor at the ski resort on the same day.

Police Coroners Officer Tony Forder says he's waiting on further details from French authorities, but it appears to be a tragic accident.

Mr Hermaszewski's body has been released so his family can arrange his funeral.

The inquest has been adjourned by Relief Coroner Dr. Martin Barrett until further enquiries into his death become known.
