Free showcase to mark World Wetlands Day

More than 30 conservationists, researchers and environment groups will be taking part in the Marine Mission at the Radisson Hotel.

Today (2 February) is World Wetlands Day.

For the second year running, the day is being marked in Jersey by a free event called Marine Mission, exploring the importance of the island's marine and coastal environment.

Exhibitions will run from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, followed by a programme of talks from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

Environment Minister Steve Luce will give the opening address, followed by a welcome and archaeology update delivered by Bob Tompkins on behalf of Andrew Mitchell, Chair of the Jersey Ramsar Advisory Group.

Donna de Gruchy will talk about the work of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue in Jersey, and Emily Wagdin from Ocean Culture Life will discuss using storytelling to deepen our connection with the ocean.

Underwater photographer Grace Bailey will present her latest work and marine biologist Dr Paul Chambers will talk about the dolphins and other visitors to our shores.

There will also be contributions from Kevin McIlwee, Chairman of Jersey Marine Conservation and Alex Purdie from Alderney Wildlife Trust.

Jersey Duchess skipper Robert Swain will present findings of his research into mobile marine species in Portelet Bay and there will be progress report from Sophie Alexander on the conservation projects Ports of Jersey has undertaken.

A open Q&A session will give the public the chance to speak directly to the experts, while artists will display their works and environment groups will be represented.
