Fort Pool Demolition To Start Next Month

Demolition of the Fort Regent swimming pool will start at the end of July. It will take around ten months, and cost almost £2.7 million

The empty pool, tank and basement plant room will all be taken down, 15 years after it was closed.

Strong winds have lifted and removed parts of the pool roof in that time, causing serious health and safety concerns.

There have also been reports of break-ins and vandalism.

The work will be carried out by local contractors DB Cummins.

They'll spend the first six weeks clearing the site and removing large amounts of asbestos.

The area of the Glacis Field will be returned to grass.

A political steering group has been set up to try and find ways of revitalising the Fort, led by Deputy Hugh Raymond.

“The Fort pool holds fond memories for many islanders and its demolition marks the end of an era. However, we can now look to the future and seize the opportunity to create something that will benefit the community for years to come."

The total cost of the project including associated planning costs, fees and contingencies is £2,697,000.
