Airport Closed After Plane Overshoots Runway

The Piper Cherokee plane came to a stop on the soft gravel surface at the end of the runway.

All flights in and out of Jersey Airport were suspended for a time this afternoon after a plane overshot the runway.

The 1973 Piper PA-28 Cherokee light aircraft came off the western end of the runway as it was coming in to land at 2:17 PM on Tuesday afternoon.

The four-seater private plane set off from Albert-Picardie Airport in northern France.

It was brought to a stop by the soft gravel 'arrestor bed' surface at the end of the runway designed to stop out of control aircraft.

Four people were on board at the time - two adults and two children. They all escaped any injuries.

Most of Jersey's flights today have already been cancelled or rescheduled because of the foggy weather.

Flights to and from Jersey have been delayed

Flights in and out of Jersey Airport were suspended while the plane is removed from the end of the runway.

It was cleared at around 3:40 PM by the Airport Fire Service.

The plane was towed to safety by the Airport Fire Service

The Piper Cherokee plane was towed away to an area of the apron by the Jersey Aero Club.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been notified, and a full investigation into the incident is due to take place.

Ports of Jersey says until the outcome of that investigation is known, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the incident.
