The annual Tinathon at West's Centre is collecting food for Shelter Trust's seven hostels and for food parcels for the island's homeless and vulnerable.
People are being asked to bring tins of food to town between 8am and 2.30pm today (10 October).
Last year, 12,000 tins were collected, and organisers are hoping they can match, or even exceed that.
The donations of baked beans, soups, fruit, veg, fish and other preserved produce help to stock the kitchen cupboards at the charity's seven hostels.
They are also used to make up food parcels for vulnerable people in emergency accommodation. Last year Shelter Trust distributed 1500 food parcels.
Head organiser Richard Robins says schools and businesses have already contributed a large number of tins.
Les Quennevais school amassed more than 1,100, which Richard described as 'brilliant!'
Shelter Trust supports 100 people every night at its hostels and serves more than 100,000 meals each year.
"All of these are really helpful to our chefs for making these meals for these people every night."
