Funeral Held For Richard Rondel

Hundreds of mourners packed into St Helier Methodist Centre this lunchtime to celebrate the life of Deputy Richard Rondel.

The popular town politician died from Cancer on the 14 November at the age of 54. It was exactly seven years since he was first elected.

Around 750 turned out, wearing brightly-coloured ties, shirts and scarves at Richard's request.

The service was led by the Dean of Jersey, The Very Reverend Mike Keirle.

Mourners departed the service to the tune of 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' - a song chosen by the Deputy, as a lasting impression of his positivity.

In a first for the island, the service was also streamed online, including to the adjacent hall.

It was followed by a wake at the Town Hall, where flags are being flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Deputy Rondel was first elected to the States in November 2011, representing St Helier 3/4 District.  He topped the poll at the last election in May 2018.

For four years he served as Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and was the creator of the Fete de St Helier, which is now an annual fixture on the Jersey events calendar.

He continued to represent his constituents and champion community causes that he was passionate about throughout his illness and right up to his death on 14th November.  

Colleagues have paid tribute to him as 'a true gentleman' with 'a great sense of humour, a generous nature and a zest for life'.
