Young Guernsey cricketers 'should feel proud' after World Cup exploits

Guernsey's under-19 cricket team is being hailed after they competed against some of Europe's top talent in World Cup qualification action.

They narrowly missed out on the next stage of World Cup qualification after finishing third at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup Europe Division Two qualifier, held in the island last week.

Guernsey won four of their five games, only losing to eventual runners-up Sweden in the semi-final.

The island-side beat Germany by 85 runs to win the third-place play off at Port Soif.

Guernsey Cricket Chief Operating Officer, Richard Headington, said:

"This tournament showcased the fantastic quality of players, coaches and facilities in Guernsey. The team has managed to handle the pressure of hosting whilst playing top tier cricket, they should come away with their heads held high.

"This tournament has brought some of Europe’s top U19 cricket talent to the island, and the Guernsey team should feel proud to be a part of that group. I have no doubt this experience will live long in the memory of these players, who all have bright futures ahead in the sport."

Over five days of action, Guernsey welcomed teams from Sweden, the Isle of Man, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and France.

The Guernsey Women's squad will represent the island at the Women's Continental Cricket Cup 2026 in Romania.

They will compete in Group A against the hosts, Turkey, and the Czech Republic.
