‘Tinsel Tracker’ leads to Asian Hornet nest in Guernsey

Clever technique using tinsel tracks a worker hornet to the nest.

The tinsel tracker technique was devised by Jersey hornet researcher Chris Isaacs.

It involves attaching a long strip of the metallic thread to a worker hornet to extend the distance the invasive insect can be viewed and tracked, through binoculars.

The Asian Hornet team used the method after reports of large insects near Saints Bay.

A football-sized nest was discovered in the shrubs and destroyed.

Project Coordinator Francis Russell says the tinsel tracking technique is a game-changer.

"The nests we’ve discovered this summer appear to be more developed than those found in previous years, as the fine weather seems to have allowed for uninterrupted nest building and foraging.

"These more innovative methods of tracking will therefore be instrumental in helping identify and remove nests more quickly.”
