Team Guernsey gets Island Games send-off

“Do your very best”, that was the message from the Bailiff as Team Guernsey gets ready to go to Orkney for the Island Games.

The island's top athletes gathered at Beau Sejour on Wednesday evening (2 July) for a send-off.

They will soon be joining 2,000 people from 23 other islands, competing in 12 sports on the Scottish island.

Sir Richard McMahon gave them some words of encouragement to get them on their way.

Guernsey's Bailiff Sir Richard McMahon addresses Team Guernsey

Clad in the Sarnian green tracksuit, archer Lisa Gray told us how it feels to represent the island.

"Seeing the Guernsey flag, and wearing it, always makes me immensely proud. I will never stop enjoying it."

Team Guernsey's archers have their own donkey mascot!

Badminton player Alex Tapp says it will be a different vibe to 2023, when Guernsey hosted the games.

"We had the aspect of the home support, and being able to go home at the end of each day.  I am hoping it will bring us closer together as a team.  We will be spending more time with each other.

 Triathlete and flagbearer Amy Critchlow

Triathlete Amy Critchlow will be team Guernsey's flagbearer for the opening ceremony next Saturday (12 July).

"The biggest worrying part is probably the sea temperature, because it is a lot colder than here!

"Sheltand and Orkney and the islands from up north will probably love it."

Guernsey topped the medals table two years ago with 54 gold, 49 silver and 42 bronze.
